I’ve got a friend who’s experiencing massive RAM usage, with no apparent process behind it. If I were having the problem myself, I’d just beat my head against it until something worked, but that’s difficult to do over an IM chat, so I’m trying to be smart.

I’m reasonably sure it’s not malware - and I’m going to have him run a full scan to be sure - so I’m thinking driver memory leak?

Yeah, I would need to walk you through a lot of troubleshooting. Email me if you want more help, my username at gmail. I wouldnt be able to help you until tomorrow though.

You can try Process Explorer for more details, but you may find its background updates running. Windows 10 is a totally different animal when it comes to troubleshooting.

I had a similar problem just recently. It was a driver memory leak, as you suggested. I BELIEVE though I’m not sure it was the Razer Surround driver. That or my Graphics driver. I disabled the one and updated the other and the problem went away.

Thanks, man!

Yeah, I’m still on 7 myself, which is another wrinkle. I’m going to use Poolmon to try and find the leaky driver tomorrow. If that doesn’t show up anything, I’ll have to explore new ideas. Or pass it off on the group’s other tech savvy member—he built the PC.

Ah, good to know I’m not just clutching at straws. How’d you figure out which driver it was? I’ve looked around, and Poolmon seems to be the most-recommended course.

Oh, I hope it isn’t bios related. I’m terrible with bios issues.

It was during a “Fucking fucker why won’t you fucking work!?” fugue so my memories aren’t exact. I don’t have that many -things- on this computer so it was a pretty short list.

Now that I think about it, the Razer Surround thing was an audio-related crash in GTA V, so I can say with certainty that updating my graphics drivers fixed it.

Ah, yes, I know that feeling well. I feel like I’d be a tech support god by now if all the information I’ve picked up while in such a state had actually stuck.

There are supposed to be some iffy Nvidia drivers going around at the moment... I might just get him to do that before anything else, and hope the problem goes away.

Might be a memory leak within Windows update if it's a new install of Windows. There is a patch for it within Windows update on line. Just make sure everything is up to date

If there’s a Windows 10-compatible fix online, I’ll get him to install it after updating his Nvidia drivers. With luck, I won’t have to walk him through using Poolmon and some command prompt.
